Taiwan's coal imports down 30% in October from a year earlier
Taiwan Customs preliminary statistics show that in October 2024, Taiwan's coal imports were 4,234,200 tons, a decrease of 13.51% from 4,895,700 tons in the same period of the previous year, and a decrease of 28.78% from 5,945,300 tons in the previous month, hitting a low since March this year, and at the same time a new low for the same period of time since at least 2003, according to Taiwan Customs.

In October 2024, Taiwan's coal imports amounted to US$625 million, down 21.69% year-on-year and 26.05% sequentially. This projected the average price of Taiwan's coal imports in the month to be US$147.61 per ton, down 9.46% year-on-year and up 3.83% sequentially.
Data show that in October, Taiwan imported the most coal from Australia, 1.652 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 17.91%, down 40.69% from a year earlier; imported 1.490 million tons of Indonesian coal, the same ring than the decline of 9.53% and 19.48%; imported 364,200 tons of Russian coal, the same ring than the decline of 5.33% and 48.91% respectively.
In October, Taiwan imported 3,292,400 tons of bituminous coal, a year-on-year decline of 8.26%, down 29.05%; other coal imports of 932,800 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 28.51%, down 28.45%.
From January to October, Taiwan imported a total of 48,810,600 tons of coal, a year-on-year decline of 3.6%; the cumulative value of imports of $ 8,203 million, a year-on-year decline of 21.89%.
In October, Taiwan imported 14,500 tons of coke, respectively 244.2% and 321.75% increase; coke imports amounted to 3.896 million U.S. dollars, respectively 163.42% and 351.97% increase in the same period, the cumulative total of 139,400 tons of coke imported in January-October, an increase of 7.69% year-on-year.
In October, Taiwan's liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports amounted to 1.8413 million tons, an increase of 11.46% year-on-year, down 7.61% from a year earlier; imports amounted to US$1.1 billion, an increase of 14.66% year-on-year, down 2.44% from a year earlier.
From January to October, LNG imports were 17.9206 million tons, up 5.74% year-on-year; the import value was $9.791 billion, down 9.11% year-on-year.
