EIA: U.S. coal production down 8.31% year-on-year in September
On October 28, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) released its latest Monthly Energy Review report, which showed that U.S. coal production in September 2024 was 44.506 million short tons (40.3752 million tons), down 8.31% from 48.542 million short tons in the same period of the previous year, and down 1.85% from 45.347 million short tons in the previous month.
Total U.S. coal production for January-September was 379 million short tons, down 13.1 percent from 437 million short tons in the same period a year earlier.
On the export side, U.S. coal exports were 9.094 million short tons in August 2024, up 1.06 percent from a year earlier and up 3.81 percent from a year earlier.
From January to August 2024, the U.S. exported a cumulative total of 70,451,000 short tons of coal, up 8.62% from 64,863,000 short tons in the same period a year earlier.
On the consumption side, the report shows that in July 2024, the total coal consumption in the United States was 43.399 million short tons, down 8.89% year-on-year and up 15.92% sequentially.
Among them, coal consumption in the power sector was 40.523 million short tons, up 17.5% year-on-year; industrial coal consumption was estimated at 2.834 million short tons, down 7.08% year-on-year; and commercial coal consumption was estimated at 42,000 short tons, up 10.53% year-on-year.
From January to July, cumulative U.S. coal consumption was 235 million short tons, down 2.53% year-on-year. Among them, coal consumption in the electric power industry was 21.3 million short tons, down 1.98% year-on-year; industrial coal consumption was 20.931 million short tons, down 7.74% year-on-year.
