Indian power firms' coal imports hit one-year low in September

In September, India's power utility power coal imports declined both year-on-year and year-on-year, hitting a new high since September last year.

India's Central Electricity Authority (CEA) latest data show that in September 2024, India's power enterprises coal imports totaled 5.302 million tons, down 5.07% year-on-year, down 9.3% sequentially.

During the month, of the coal imported by Indian power companies, 4,291,900 tons were supplied to power plants directly using imported coal for power generation, an increase of 10.29% year-on-year and 3.28% sequentially, while 1,083,300 tons were used for blending with domestic coal, a decrease of 40.4% year-on-year and a decline of 40.27% sequentially.

In September 2024, among those blended with domestic coal, seven state-owned power companies imported 390,000 tons and five private companies imported 618,300 tons, the data showed. While, among the enterprises supplying electricity generated directly from imported coal, one state-owned enterprise imported 80,600 tons and 15 private power enterprises imported 4,211,300 tons.

In the first six months of the current fiscal year (April-September 2024), Indian power firms imported a total of 35,928,800 tons of coal, an increase of 29.32% from 27,782,200 tons in the same period of the previous year.
